Boston reports 1st West Nile case of summer

(AP) Boston health officials have confirmed the city’s first human case of West Nile virus this year, but it’s not clear where the woman was infected.

The Public Health Commission said Friday the Beacon Hill resident in her 50s had traveled before becoming ill. She has been released from the hospital. High levels of West Nile have been reported around the country this year. West Nile mosquitoes have been found in several Boston neighborhoods.

Massachusetts has had nine other cases of the mosquito-borne illness, in Middlesex County and western Massachusetts.

State officials said Thursday a Worcester County man in his 70s died last month of another mosquito disease, Eastern equine encephalitis. Another Massachusetts man recovered from EEE. Officials said he may have been infected out-of-state.

Health officials urge precautions against mosquitoes until the first hard frost.
